How to grow vinca from seeds in pots

Vinca or Periwinkle Madagascar is an annual flowering plant that is native to Europe and Southwest Asia. Vincas are subshrubs that grow up to 12 inches. These flowers come in colours like pink, red, white, purple and magenta. Vinca flowers are generally grown as ornamental plants and they help to attract pollinators. There are two main species Vinca Major and Vinca Minor. Since vincas spread in the ground they are grown as ground covers. Vincas grow best in sandy loam soil. They can be grown in containers too. Vincas are drought-tolerant and they grow well during the mid spring and summer season. They can tolerate temperatures between 24° C to 38° C (75°F to 100°F). They can be grown from seeds or from propagation. 

Grow vinca from seeds in pots

To grow vinca in pots you will need one that is 8 inches deep and has proper drainage holes. Take a well-drained pot and fill it with a potting mix that contains 50 % garden soil, 30 % coarse sand and 20 % compost. Take three to four seeds sow them in the container and cover it with a thin layer of soil. Then gently water.

Place the pot in a sunny location. Seeds will take at least 2 to 3 weeks to germinate. You can add fertilizer to your vincas once in 2 months as they can grow well even in average soil conditions. After the plant grows about 12 inches it starts to give flowers. Vinca is drought tolerant so overwatering them can lead to root rot. Water the plant when the soil is dry. Vinca is not frost-tolerant and should be brought indoors during the winter season.

Growing vinca from stem cuttings

• Take a stem that is at least 4 to 6 inches long from a mature vinca plant and remove the leaves at the bottom of the stem.
• Take a glass jar fill it with a half inch of water and keep the stem in the glass jar. Place the glass jar in a shady area. Change the water once in 3 days.
• After 10 days you will see roots developing from the stem, you can plant these stems in a container.
