Diatomaceous earth can help control pests such as mealy bugs, aphids, thrips, spider mites, beetles etc. Simply sprinkle some DE powder on the plant’s base and foliage. DE is not toxic and cannot harm the soil. DE contains trace minerals such as magnesium, iron and calcium. It can help to improve drainage and acts as a slow-release fertiliser. Diatomaceous earth can kill pests within 48 hours. The only downside to using DE is that it can also harm beneficial insects so avoid using DE directly on flowers.

What type of Diatomaceous earth should you use?

There are two types of DE used one is food grade and the other one is industrial grade DE. Food-grade DE is used in gardens. This is also used in many personal care products.

When to apply Diatomaceous earth ?

You can apply Diatomaceous Earth on your plants early morning. You can dust your plants with Diatomaceous earth. If you want to get rid of most of the pests and insects you should use diatomaceous earth once in a week for about a month. However, if it rains, you have to reapply Diatomaceous earth on your plants again.

When you use diatomaceous earth make sure to wear gloves and goggles. Diatomaceous earth is not toxic but it can still harm your lungs and cause skin irritation if it is inhaled in large amounts. When applying Diatomaceous earth do not allow children to play there as inhaling Diatomaceous earth can cause some harm.
