Coffee grounds have many uses in your garden. They can help in improving overall soil fertility. Although they can improve the soil they must be used in less amounts. You can mix coffee grounds with compost before using it on plants.

Benefits of using coffee grounds for plants.

  • Coffee grounds help to aerate and make the soil more acidic.
  • Helps to repel cats and slugs and prevents weed growth.
  • Using coffee grounds can help to prevent the spread of diseases such as fungus rots and wilts.
  • Rich in nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous. Also contains micronutrients such as copper, zinc, boron, magnesium and iron.
  • Absorbs heavy metals in contaminated soils.

Disadvantages of using coffee beans

  • Usage of too many coffee grounds can inhibit the growth of good microbes.
  • Coffee grounds can be acidic for acid-loving plants as well

Certain plants don’t like coffee grounds. Some of them include Roses, chrysanthemums, garlic, lemon tree and sagebrush.

The best way to use coffee grounds in your garden is to directly add them to your compost bins. Make sure that they compromise only 10% of the whole compost. You can also spread a thin layer of coffee grounds on the soil surface as well.
