eggshells

Eggshells are a rich source of calcium and they can be used as a fertilizer for plants. Other nutrients present in eggshells include potassium, phosphorous and magnesium. Deficiency of calcium causes blossom rot disease in plants. Using eggshells in your garden once a month can help to avoid calcium deficiency. They help to lower soil acidity and encourage root growth. Eggshells take a long time to decompose. Rather than using crushed eggshells, it is best to blend them into a fine powder and use them on plants.

Ways to use eggshells in your garden

1. Powder the eggshells

Clean the eggshells in water and dry them well. After they are well dried blend them into a fine powder using a blender. After powdering them you can add them to the soil. Make sure to use a garden trowel to mix them with soil as it can help in better absorption.

2. Eggshell tea

Making eggshell tea is another way to fertilize your plants. Wash the eggshells well and dry them. Once they are dry, crumble the shells using your hands. Take a bowl of water and boil it. After it’s boiled a bit take the bowl and keep it aside. Then add the crumbled eggshells to the water. Allow it to sit for a few hours. Then strain the liquid and use it for your plants. You can add the crumbled eggshells to your compost bin.
