flowering in plants

Everyone loves to grow flowers in their garden during the summer season. Our garden looks more pretty when they have more flowers blooming.

Ways to increase flowering in plants

1. Sunlight

Flowering plants require lots of sunlight to produce more blooms. Grow them in locations that get 6 to 8 hours of sunlight every day to get more blooms. When temperatures are too high, especially during summers make sure they get some afternoon shade too.

2. Water

Regular watering is required to get more blooms. Make sure you water the soil till it becomes moist.

3. Deadhead old blooms

When wilted flowers are cut off, it encourages more blooms in the flowering plants. When there are wilted flowers in your plants, they attract unwanted pests and insects. Chopping off wilted flowers prevents the flowers from self-seeding.

4. Fertilize

To get more blooms feed your flowering plants once in a while with fertilizer rich in potassium and phosphorous. Using liquid fertiliser helps the plants to absorb more nutrients faster. Here are some of the best DIY liquid fertilisers for plants.

5. Rich soil

Plants grow best in sandy loam soil rich in organic matter. Make sure to prepare the soil well before you grow your flowering plants.

6. Pinch growing tip

If you want your flower plants to grow denser and bushier then make sure to pinch the growing tip when plants are young saplings.

7. Pest control

When pests like whiteflies, mealy bugs and powdery mildew affect your plants, it can reduce the number of flowers your plants produce. Make sure to control these pests using neem oil or garlic spray.

8. Container size

If you are growing flowers in containers then make sure you grow them in pots that are wider and less deep. This way the plant will focus less on root development and more on producing flowers.

9. Avoid over-fertilizing

While plants like to be fertilised, overfertilizing can also cause harm to your plant’s stunting. You can add fertiliser once a month to your plants.

Certain flowering plants like vinca, cosmos, portulaca, gazania, gaillardia etc grow best in average soil conditions. You do not need to fertilise them much.
