Spring is the season when the soil warms and is the best time to grow your favourite vegetable and flower plants. Preparing the garden soil beforehand can help you to create a successful garden. If the soil in the backyard is not ideal for growing vegetables and flowers you can still grow them in raised garden beds.

How to prepare garden beds for spring

1. Clean your garden tools

Sharpen your garden tools and sanitize them well so that you can use them for your plants. When tools are not sanitized properly, diseases spread easily from one plant to another.

2. Pull out the weeds

If you find lots of weeds in your garden, pull them out. If they are simply left in the garden, they end up competing with your vegetable and flower plants.

3. Amend the soil

During the frost season, the soil becomes compact. It should be loosened before planting anything. Loosen the soil by tilling it. After you have loosened the soil you can add compost to the soil and improve its fertility. You can also do a soil test to see if the soil is favourable to growing plants. If your soil is very poor you can still use raised beds to grow your plants.

4. Mulching your garden beds

After amending your garden beds with soil, you can mulch your beds. Mulching your garden beds can prevent weeds from sprouting and keep your garden bed weed-free. There are other benefits of mulching. Find out what they are here.

5. Starting seeds indoors

Starting seeds 3 weeks before the last frost date saves time and you can transplant your seedlings once the ground has warmed up. Here is a guide on how to start your seeds indoors.

6. Pruning

If you are growing perennials in your garden, then you can prune them once the last frost has ended and spring has arrived. This can encourage the growth of new foliage.
