Potassium and Phosphorus rich organic fertilizer

The most important nutrients that plants need are nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. They are called macronutrients. Nitrogen is essential for plants to grow foliage. Nitrogen-rich fertilizer is needed for leafy green vegetables. Phosphorous is needed for a strong root system and for producing more flower blooms. Potassium helps to build pest-resistant plants and is necessary for the transportation of nutrients across the plant. Potassium and Phosphorus rich fertilizers are essential for plants like tomatoes, pepper, cucumber, gourds etc`

Apart from these macronutrients, plants also need micronutrients like iron, magnesium, calcium, manganese, iodine, zinc etc.

Potassium and Phosphorus-rich organic fertilizers.

1. Eggshells

Eggshells contain calcium, magnesium, phosphorous and potassium which are essential for plant growth. Eggshells take a long time to break down, so they must be dried well and crushed into fine powder in a blender before they are used as fertilizer for plants.

2. Banana peels

Don’t throw your banana peels away, use them to fertilise your plants. These peels contain high levels of potassium. They also contain magnesium and calcium. You can chop the peels and add them to your compost. You can also dry the peels in bright sunlight until they turn black and crisp. You can then bury them near your vegetable plants.

3. Groundnut shells

Groundnut shells contain nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, calcium and magnesium. You can either use them to mulch your plants or you can add them to your compost.

4. Pomegranate peels

These peels contain magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphorous, and sodium. These peels can be chopped into pieces and added to your compost. You can also dry the peels well and blend them into a fine powder and add it to your soil.

5. Kelp Meal

Kelp meal is a type of seaweed that is harvested from cold ocean waters. It is dried and processed and made into fertiliser. Kelp meal is rich in nutrients like phosphorous, calcium, nitrogen, iron and magnesium. It is a slow-release fertiliser and can be used in plants.

Spread it in the base of the plant avoiding the stem. You simply mulch the soil using kelp meal.

6. Bone meal

Bone meal is rich in phosphorus, calcium, nitrogen, magnesium and zinc. It is a slow-release fertilizer. But before you use bone meal as fertilizer for your plants, make sure you have tested your soil pH. If the soil pH is greater than 7 then the bone meal will not work. Make sure the soil pH is below seven before you use bone meal fertilizer. Sprinkle it around your plants. You can sprinkle it when you prepare the soil for planting. Then you can sprinkle it once or twice to add nutrients to your plants.
