grow oregano at home

Oregano is a low-maintenance herb that belongs to the mint family. It is native to the Mediterranean region and grows up to 31 inches tall. Oregano produces flowers that are white, pink or purple. It has been used since ancient purposes for medical and other purposes since the 18th century. Here is how to grow oregano at home:

Growing conditions

Oregano is a drought-tolerant perennial herb, that can grow best in sandy loam soil. The soil pH should be between 6.0 to 9.0. It grows best when it gets 6 to 8 hours of sunlight every day. Oregano does not like waterlogged soil, so avoid overwatering. Also, make sure to protect your oregano from heavy rains. Although certain varieties of oregano can tolerate frost, some varieties cannot tolerate frost. You can fertilise your plants once in 2 months with a liquid fertiliser or compost.

How to grow oregano from seeds

The best time to sow the seeds is during the spring season. Take a small pot and fill it with seed starting mix. Next, sow a few seeds and mist them gently. Your seedlings will germinate within 7 to 14 days. It takes about 2 to 3 weeks for your oregano to develop the first set of true leaves. Once your oregano seedlings have grown about 8 inches tall, you can transplant them to bigger pots. You can grow oregano in a pot that is at least 9 inches deep and wide. Place the pot in a location that gets 6 to 8 hours of sunlight. Once your oregano matures into a big plant you can harvest the leaves.

Grow oregano using stem cuttings

You can grow lots of oregano using stem cuttings. Take a mature oregano plant, and cut a few healthy stem cuttings. Cut just below the node. Next, keep the stem cutting in a potting mix containing compost 40% sand 40% and 20% perlite. Within 2 weeks the stem cutting will start to form roots and you can then transfer it to a bigger container or to the garden.

Pests and diseases

Oregano is a low-maintenance herb and in most cases, it is not susceptible to any kind of pests or diseases. In some cases, your plant may be attacked by aphids or spider mites. You can use neem oil or diatomaceous earth to control those pests.
