Cabbage belongs to the Brassica family. It is closely related to Cauliflower and Broccoli.
It is native to Western and southern Europe. They are biennials that are grown annually. Cabbage grows best during the spring and fall seasons.

Growing conditions for cabbage

Optimum temperature: Cabbage grows best when temperatures are between 8 to 30°C (46 to 86°F).
Soil: Cabbage grows best in well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter, but can tolerate various soils including clay. However, cabbage cannot tolerate saline soils.
Sunlight: Cabbage requires 4 to 6 hours of daylight to grow well.
Water: Water your cabbage regularly to keep the soil moist. Watering on the leaves can cause fungal diseases so avoid watering there.

Growing cabbage from seeds

You can sow the seeds on a tray or in small containers. Fill the trays or small containers with seed starting mix and sow the seeds. Sow 2 to 3 seeds in a seed tray or a small container. Seeds should be sown 1/4 inch deep and an inch wide. They will germinate within 7 to 10 days. Once they have germinated you can remove the weak seedlings leaving the strong ones to grow. Once the first true leaves develop you can transplant them into the garden or bigger containers.

You can grow cabbage in containers that are 12 inches deep. For the potting mix use 10% sand, 60% compost, 15% perlite and 15%vermiculite. Cabbage requires nutrients such as nitrogen during the initial stages to grow. During the yielding periods, nutrients such as potassium and phosphorous are required.
Cabbage grown in pots can be fertilised once in 3 weeks. If you are planting cabbages in the soil, amend it with compost or aged manure. Fertilise the cabbage twice during the growing season. You can harvest cabbage within 50 to 120 days.

Common pests and diseases of cabbage

Whiteflies, slugs, cabbage moths, and snails are some of the common pests that attack cabbage. Practising companion planting using beneficial insects, using neem oil and diatomaceous earth are some ways to control these pests.
